Here is a clear and simple overview of study options in New Zealand after A/Ls, Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD based on the most current official information. 
STUDY AFTER A/L (A-Levels or equivalent) 
• You can apply for a Bachelor’s degree if you have completed 12 years of schooling with good grades. 
• Required English: IELTS 6.0 overall (no band below 5.5) or equivalent.
 • Popular fields: Business, IT, Engineering, Nursing, Hospitality. 
• Most universities accept A-Level results directly. 
STUDY AFTER A BACHELOR’S DEGREE (Master’s Level) 
• Requirements: A recognized Bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA around 2.75 to 3.0. 
• English: IELTS 6.5 overall (no band below 6.0) or equivalent. 
• Duration: 1 to 2 years. • Coursework and research options available. 
STUDY AFTER A MASTER’S DEGREE (PhD Level) 
• Requirements: Master’s degree with strong academic background. 
• English: IELTS 6.5+, often no band less than 6.0. • Duration: 3 to 4 years. 
• Tuition for international PhD students is often similar to domestic fees. 
SCHOLARSHIPS (2026–2027) 
• Manaaki New Zealand Scholarships: Fully funded for undergrad and postgrad (eligible countries). 
• University scholarships: Offered by AUT, Auckland, Otago, Canterbury, Waikato, Massey, VUW. 
• PhD scholarships widely available. 
ADMISSION BASICS

STUDENT VISA REQUIREMENTS
 
• Offer of Place from a NZ institution 
• Proof of funds: NZD 20,000 per year 
• Tuition payment receipt 
• Medical + Police clearance POST-STUDY WORK VISA 
• Bachelor’s, Master’s, PhD: Up to 3 years open work visa. 
• Diplomas (Level 4–6): 1 year, sometimes 2 years.
